Common Reservations about Veneers

Veneers, before and after

Veneers can correct many dental problems and give you a beautiful smile.

Do you dream of having a beautiful smile? Are you thinking about veneers, but not sure this procedure is for you?

Even though modern veneers can be used to correct a wide range of dental problems, some patients still have reservations about choosing them. While it is always important for patients to understand their options for treatment, dental veneers are one of the safest and effective ways of treating cracked, crooked and discolored teeth available today.

Many of the fears that patients have about choosing veneers may be due to concerns related to older versions of this cosmetic dentistry procedure that have been eliminated with improved techniques and materials. In years past the process for creating these dental aids produced a less durable product that could chip or crack over time. This meant that the patient had to have them replaced occasionally when damage occurred. Modern veneers are made from an updated and incredibly strong and resilient material that is almost as hard as the actual tooth it is being applied to and can last for decades with the proper dental hygiene and regular office visits.

Another problem with the procedure in years past was that the adhesive used to secure the dental veneers to a patient’s tooth would break down over time and allow the veneers to loosen. To correct for this problem, the dentist would have to remove and reattach the veneer with new adhesive to secure it. Modern adhesives are much stronger and more durable than ever and can easily hold the veneer in place for a lifetime with proper care.

One final concern is that older veneers were slightly thicker than modern versions, which meant the dentist had to remove more of the surface of the tooth during preparation. This could lead to sensitivity in some patients, especially in smaller front teeth. Since the material used for modern veneers is far more durable, they can be made much thinner and require less material to be removed from the underlying tooth. All of these changes make modern veneers the a great choice for patients looking to correct cosmetic issues with their smile.

“Adult Braces” Is Not an Oxymoron

Dr. Georgaklis can often straighten adults' teeth in 6 months.

Ask us if your teeth qualify for “speed braces” – and can be straightened in 6 months.

I meet many adults who, for whatever reason, never wore braces as a child or teen and now wish they had or are in need of them again as an adult. We all want to look our best, and we all know a great smile goes a long way. Yet, over and over again, I hear my patients say, “I want that perfect smile – I just don’t want to have to wear big shiny braces!”

The reasons for our aversion to braces vary from simple aesthetics to social anxiety to fear of discomfort. Many adults who rely on their ability to speak publicly are concerned that they will lose credibility or that braces will distract their listeners. Many adults feel that braces are a vestige of adolescence – they’re simply too old for braces. And all of us would love a quick fix to straight teeth instead of having braces at all.

The truth is there’s no quick fix. In the same way that achieving physical fitness requires you to be diligent with diet and exercise, getting a picture-perfect smile takes some time and work as well. But the good news is: it’s not as bad as you might think and often we can straighten teeth in as little as 6 months.

Clear Braces for Adults

Modern dentistry provides many ways to straighten your teeth, and the one I like to recommend to adults with an aversion to traditional braces are ceramic, or clear braces. Clear braces provide the same benefits of metal ones: they will straighten your teeth with time and care. The biggest advantage to clear braces is that they are much less noticeable!

But the advantages don’t stop there. Many assume that ceramic braces are not as strong as metal ones. This couldn’t be further from the truth – ceramics are just as effective.

Celebrities such as Tom Cruise and Faith Hill have relied on ceramic braces as adults to get their famous smiles. At the end of the day, being able to flash your perfectly straight pearly whites for the rest of your life is well worth the investment in braces, especially when they’re as subtle as ceramics! Give my office a call today to schedule a consultation and see if ceramic braces are right for you.

Treat Your Teeth Right – Healthy Foods that Support Good Oral Health

As much as possible, choose snacks that are beneficial to dental health

Choose healthy snacks that are beneficial to dental health.

Most of us have heard before what items are not good for you to eat – candy, sodas, acidic foods, etc. However, I feel it is less often that you hear what foods are good for your teeth. So, here is a list of some of the foods that are most beneficial to oral health.

Cheese

Cheese has very low acidity and is low in carbs, but it is high in calcium and phosphate. This balance is perfect for maintaining the pH balance in the mouth, which is necessary to the preservation of an environment for healthy bacteria. The consumption of cheese also causes your mouth to produce excess saliva, which kills plaque-forming bacteria. And the calcium in cheese helps to protect and rebuild tooth enamel.

 Celery

One of the most annoying parts of eating celery is how long it takes to chew, but this is also part of its greatest benefit. The prolonged chewing causes increased saliva production, which fights plaque-causing bacteria and is an important part of your body’s defense against cavities. The texture of celery also cleans the gums and teeth during chewing.

Salmon

Salmon is great at protecting against periodontal disease. The Omega-3 oils in the fish prevent inflammation in the gums that can lead to periodontal disease and the oils have been found to have strong anti-bacterial effects.

Onions

Onions contain sulfur compounds that are antibacterial. The effects are most prominent when eaten raw, but for those of us that are unable to stomach raw onions the dental benefits can still be collected through cooked onions.

 Vitamin-C Packed Fruits

Vitamin-C plays a key role in the build-up of collagen in your gums, thus strengthening their defense against bacteria. Fruits like kiwis and oranges are packed with vitamin-C. Collagen-strong gums are less likely to be infected by periodontal disease.

I hope that this helps guide some of your future eating choices and provides you with extra resources for maintaining healthy teeth. In a follow-up post I will make sure to discuss beverages that are beneficial to dental health.

Proper Flossing

Proper FlossingFlossing is a proven method for loosening debris from hard-to-reach surfaces of your teeth and gum lines. Next to brushing, flossing is a highly effective method for removing plaque on tooth surfaces your brush can’t reach very well.

Left untreated, plaque deposits can eventually lead to gum disease and tooth decay. Another benefit of flossing is increasing blood circulation in your gums. Gum stimulation is a necessary means of keeping your gum tissues healthy; strong gums are the foundation of your teeth.

Wind about 18 inches of floss around the middle fingers of each hand, leaving about 5 inches between your hands. Pinch the floss between your thumbs and index fingers and leave about one inch in between to work with. Gently guide the floss down between the teeth, using a side-to-side motion.

Learning the proper way to floss your teeth is important. Dr. Georgaklis will be happy to demonstrate proper flossing techniques at his La Jolla dental office.

Our office recommends that you practice flossing once a day. Many people find that flossing at night is an easy bedtime routine; moreover, nighttime flossing helps to protect your teeth during sleep, when harmful plaque can do a lot of damage.

One type of dental floss does not work for everyone. Consumers can choose between waxed or unwaxed, flavored or unflavored, and regular or tape types. In general, a waxed floss slides between the teeth easier than an unwaxed floss. Flavored floss leaves a fresh taste in the mouth, and is especially nice for those times when brushing or rinsing is not possible. Tape floss is typically thicker than regular floss and is generally favored by people with wide gaps between their teeth.

Remember, proper brushing and flossing is the best thing you can do to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Stop Biting Your Fingernails

Stop Biting Your NailsMost people bite their nails because it is a nervous habit. It is the one thing that they always have available under their control when they are nervous or anxious about something. For some, biting fingernails is a lifelong habit that is extremely difficult to quit and can become painful and embarrassing.

When you bite your nails you’re inviting all of dirt and germs get trapped beneath your fingernails right into your body. Biting your nails usually leads to the skin around them getting irritated and unsightly. It is also quite common for there to be pain or bleeding if the nail is chewed to closely to the nail bed.

At my San Diego/La Jolla office I developed a unique dental system that helps you control fingernail biting. I have been using it for many years with proven success. The technique involves placing a fixed appliance on the back teeth where it is not visible. It is tooth colored so no one will know it is on your teeth.

Attaching the fixed appliance is painless and easy. There is no drilling involved and it is completely reversible. I start by making sure the tooth is free from decay or any other dental problems. I then clean the top surface of the tooth, place a bonding agent, and then build up the tooth colored material to make your custom appliance. Once it is in place I smooth all the edges and make sure it is sealed onto the tooth. This is done on two teeth in your mouth, one in the back on each side. Once they are both in place I make sure you are biting evenly on each one to ensure you are comfortable while wearing them.
How does it work?

Since the fixed appliance restricts you from completely biting down, you are prevented from clipping off your fingernail with your teeth . It’s just not that easy to do without a little help. By having a biting surface on only two areas in your mouth you are forced to stop biting off your fingernails.

Once you feel as though you no longer need the fixed appliance it can be quickly and easily removed polishing it off. You natural tooth will not be affected by the placement of the materials on it. The tooth will feel just as it did before you had the appliance placed.

If you are looking for a new and different approach to stop biting your fingernails contact Dr. George Georgaklis today.
